Mr Maria, of Horsham, was a type one diabetic and died suddenly in January this year.
Friend Dimity O'Bryan has organised the 'Are you smarter than a Jelly Baby?' trivia night along with Mr Maria's family and friends to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
She said they chose this week to host the event because it would have been Mr Maria's 25th birthday on Wednesday.
"We have had a really good response from people and have received lots of support from local businesses," she said.
"There will be a mix of trivia, games and lucky door prizes.
"We want it to be a fun night. Even for people who don't necessarily like trivia there will be something to enjoy."
Miss O'Bryan said Mr Maria's family would attend the event at Horsham Town Hall.
She said Horsham Rural City Council had donated the use of the hall for the night.
Mr Maria previously worked as a cadet building surveyor with council.
"Ian was a valued member of council and they were happy to support the event," Miss O'Bryan said.
Miss O'Bryan said all funds raised would go the foundation.
She said the doors would open at 7pm, with the first round of trivia to start at 7.30pm.
She said tickets could be purchased at the door for $25 a person or $200 for a table of 10.
Miss O'Bryan thanked Adelaide Coachlines for being the platinum sponsor of the event.
