A truck caught fire on the highway at Lawloit, about 20 kilometres west of Nhill, just before 7am on Thursday.
Kaniva Fire Brigade member Brett Moar said the prime mover pulled off the road once the driver realised the truck was on fire.
Kaniva, Nhill, Lawloit and Winiam fire brigades attended.
“It took about half an hour to bring the blaze under control,’’ Mr Moar said.
“It’s lucky it didn’t happen yesterday when it was hotter.’’
The fire caused a small spot fire in nearby grass, but crews controlled it quickly.
The truck was carrying furniture, which is now burnt.
Crews are unsure what caused the fire.
The Western Highway is closed, from the corner of the highway and Mt Elgin Road outside Nhill.
VicRoads is at the scene redirecting traffic.
It encourages people to avoid the area if possible.
