Wimmera Prostate Cancer Support Group will host its first meeting next week.
A Wimmera Australians In Retirement forum last month, which attracted about 120 people, led Horsham’s Max Judd and Brian Nagorcka and Ballarat’s Richard McMullin to start the group.
Dr McMullin has travelled to Horsham to see patients each fortnight for the past 23 years.
He spoke at the forum along with Ballarat Health Services prostate cancer specialist nurse Gay Corbett.
Ms Corbett said the group would help raise awareness of prostate cancer while giving people a support network and information.
“Peer support from people with similar experiences has been found to be very effective in reducing cancer-related stress,” she said.
“The group is already planning to attract guest speakers to meetings in Horsham to learn more about prostate cancer and treatment.”
Ms Corbett said the group could help people who might be feeling isolated or alone to meet others in a similar situation, and would also give people a chance to ask questions and discuss concerns.
The group’s meeting on Wednesday next week is at Horsham RSL at noon.
Organisers said people could call Mr Nagorcka on 5382 1452 or Mr Judd on 5382 2339 for more information.
