Planning has started for a brand new event for Horsham on Saturday, October 22. Horsham Fork to Fork will be a jam-packed day of practical food gardening workshops for the whole family.
Special guest and ABC television’s Gardening Australia host Costa Georgiadis has already been booked for the event.
“We are very excited that we have managed to find a spot in Costa’s busy schedule that will allow him to visit us in the Wimmera,” president La Vergne Lehmann said.
“I have had the good fortune to host a gardening workshop with Costa in Ararat a couple of years ago and his enthusiasm and energy is infectious.”
Horsham Urban Landcare is planning to run workshops on topics ranging from composting, worm farms, aquaponics, natural pest management, creating a wicking bed, kids activities in the garden, home grown poultry, preserving and fermenting foods, seed to seed - planting, harvesting, storing and saving, develop your garden from scratch, soil and water testing - including improving your soil and companion planting.
While the list is not exhaustive, the group is looking for people to assist in running some of the workshops.
“Currently we are looking for people to get involved to help organise the event, run workshops and help,” Ms Lehmann said.
“There will be plenty to do and we are hoping that this event can become an annual activity to help share the knowledge that so many people in our region have in growing food in their vegetable gardens and fruit orchards.
“Essentially we want people to be more sustainable by growing some fresh produce locally, share that produce, become more active – both physically and socially and enjoy what can be a fantastic family experience in their own garden.”
Horsham Urban Landcare currently holds monthly meetings at the Salvation Army Hall in Horsham on the third Tuesday of the month at 7pm. The June 21 activity will be building a bug hotel. The activity starts at 6.30pm.
