The Horsham-built guards will help protect 250,000 indigenous trees and shrubs across 270 hectares on private land.
AXIS Worx disability employment service has joined with Wimmera Greening Australia to create wildlife corridors between the Grampians, Little Desert and Big Desert National Parks.
Supported employee Garth McKenzie said he thoroughly enjoyed the work.
“It’s good that we’re going to help the environment,” he said.
“We keep a chart next to the lockers to set a record of how many tree guards we assemble in a day and then we try to beat it.”
AXIS Worx Manager Bill Schmidt said supported employees and supervisors have worked hard for the past three months to complete 100,000 tree guards.
“It’s fantastic that Greening Australia have asked us to do this work,” he said.
“Work like this provides meaningful employment and income for people with a disability.
“I’d encourage any other businesses who have contracts available to talk with us.”
