Aircraft with larger passenger and freight capacities could land at Horsham year-round if runway improvements were carried out, the draft plan stated.
“The runway length would need to be increased for small aircraft to operate without passenger and freight restrictions or if larger aircraft were to operate in the future,” the report stated.
Stakeholder group chairman Cr Tony Phelan said the plan considered the types of aircraft that might be seen at Horsham in the future and made an assessment development needed to meet the needs of those aircraft.
“In summary, the study mainly focuses on a 20-year projection with some indicators for beyond that,” he said
“It indicates that future runways 1800 metres in length should be planned for, but beyond that, there are implications with the runway width.
“A detailed survey of the north-south runway alignment has identified that the runway could be extended to the north, but there are a range of issues, including road closures, drainage, and potential noise and safety impacts on future urban developments, which need to be considered.”
Cr Phelan said planning for these runway extensions is probably the major issue to be decided for the master plan development.
