Horsham Sergeant Jason Bergen said the man barricaded himself inside his house in Winifred Street, Horsham, with a can of fuel and a knife.
"We just tried to talk with him and engage and get him to come out," he said.
Sgt Bergen said six police officers attended the siege after a family member asked Horsham police to make a welfare check.
A critical response team from Melbourne and a senior sergeant from Ararat were travelling to Horsham when the siege ended.
"The man wasn't hurt, no police officers were hurt, no members of the public were hurt and he is now receiving the treatment he needs," Sgt Bergen said.
