Kaniva-Leeor United ousted Border Districts 20.18 (138) to 14.10 (94) on Saturday to win its first game of the season.
The Eagles led after the first quarter and at half-time, but they couldn’t maintain the intensity.
The Cougars pounced on the tiring Eagles and won the second half to claim the points for the day.
Eagles coach Darrin Wilson said the outing wasn’t all doom and gloom.
“It is a work in progress,” he said.
“The group is still learning and with learning a team needs to break down at times.
“You have to take the good from the bad.”
Wilson said the side’s fitness had played a part and improving that would be a focus ongoing.
“We lost a lot of stoppages in the final stages of the game and I think that’s what hurt us the most,” he said.
Wilson was impressed with the performance of Fraser Adams.
