Brazen thieves allegedly smashed their car through a shop window in Newport before fleeing with cigarettes and alcohol in the early hours of Monday morning, police say.

Police said a white Commodore ploughed through a Challis Street grocery store just after 3am.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Hannah Rowlands said cigarettes and alcohol were stolen and "a number" of offenders fled the scene and then split into another vehicle.

She said the car police believed was involved in the ram raid was found after it crashed near the Melbourne Road exit on the Westgate Freeway.???
The car was towed by police just after 6.30pm.
She said three men were arrested in St Albans and are being interviewed by police.
Police said one man was later taken to hospital with minor injuries.
