Races at today’s meeting are named after living life members Jeffrey Hargreaves, Trevor Martin, Greg Cooper, Ken Salmon, Les McLeod, Geoff Sanderson, Col Proctor and Owen Martin.
Martin has the opportunity to make another mark on the meeting as trainer of the Steve West-owned filly Marjorie Jean in the first event of the afternoon. But the filly must overcome a couple of handy youngsters drawn inside her in Jillliby Navajo and Whitehaven Lass.
Martin's next chance for glory comes up in the sixth race with Longtan Cassanova. The 4YO gelding has drawn way out wide on the front row.
However, if driver Chris Svanosio elects to put the foot down at the start may still manage to lead or sit outside the leader.
DAY TO REMEMBER
Horsham Harness Racing Club hosted 25 youngsters for a come and try introduction into the world of the trots on Sunday.
The keen participants became immersed into an actual race through HRV’s virtual reality experience, learned about gearing up a pacer, donned driver's protective equipment for a ride on the racetrack in the double-seater sulky, explored the stables, judges tower, commentary box, stewards room, swabbing box and raceday office.
They talked about careers in the racing industry, the life of a professional driver, designed their own set of racing colours, named horses, learned about the care and feeding of equine athletes and enjoyed a barbecue lunch.
BELLMAN EXCELS
Ararat horseman Michael Bellman was rewarded for his hectic work schedule when he notched up a century of winners for the 2016-17 season at Maryborough on Friday afternoon. Bellman drove the perfect race on the Paul Morrissey-trained 4YO gelding Nomaccasforu to capture the $3500 #sayNO2familyviolence trot over the sprint trip of 1690 metres.
Bellman has taken the reins on more than 1070 occasions in his continuing quest for a winner. Nearly half of his drives have finished in the first four placings.
