Tea party celebrates care week

STAFF at Wimmera Health Care Group’s Kurrajong Lodge have recreated a Mad Hatter’s tea party for delighted residents as part of Celebrating Aged Care Week.

Personal care assistant Erin Anson, dressed as the March Hare, orchestrated the production which included a staff revue, resident’s wedding equality recreation ceremony and madcap fancy dress.

Staff also did all the cooking for residents, family and friends in attendance.

“I think because I have lost both my parents, it’s like I am looking after everyone else’s parents and grandparents,” Ms Anson said.

“We have a good crew. I do love working here.

“I think aged care staff are undervalued. People often say I should retrain to be a nurse, but if you are happy with what you are doing, why change?”

Celebrating Aged Care Week acknowledges the contribution of Victoria’s aged care workers.

Public Sector Aged Care committee chairman Don McRae, who is also the health care group’s director of nursing, has been a driving force behind the week.

“Celebrating Aged Care Week showcases the opportunities and rewards of working in public sector residential aged care,” he said.

More than 150 Victorian public residential aged care facilities have hosted events to celebrate the week.

Celebrating Aged Care Week has run since 2012 and is an initiative of the aged care committee – a network of public sector aged care directors of nursing committed to the improvement of the public residential aged care sector.
