West Wimmera CWA group conference a success

West Wimmera's group conference was held in the Natimuk Hall. Host branch was Boorang and the hall was warm and cosy on a miserable day.

Horsham mayor Pam Clark opened the conference.  Guest speaker was Brigitte Muir, who entertained with stories of her times in Nepal. Winners of the cooking with yogurt competition were Horsham branch first, Horsham May second and Dimboola third. Winners in the floral section, single bloom, Helen Torey; multiple bloom, Bev Shalders, Jenny Mitchell.

West Wimmera will recommend that the disease juvenile dermatomyositis be considered for the annual CWA Victoria Thanksgiving Fund recipient. A Horsham branch member has a granddaughter with this disease and much research needs to be done to find better management and treatment.

Dimboola branch advise that a loyal and long time member, Muriel Conn, died at the age of 99 years. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was an active member in Horsham CWA and the West Wimmera Group.

CWA history: November 1954; report in “The NEW COUNRY CRAFTS” magazine:

“Central Wimmera: group president, Mrs J. Westerland: There were 10 branches in this group, Beulah, Brim, Carron, Hopetoun, Lubeck, Minyip, Murtoa, Rupanyup, Warracknabeal, Willenabrina. Central Wimmera group is experiencing an eventful year.  Two branches,  Rupanyup and Carron (a settlement between Warracknabeal and Donald) have each celebrated their 21st birthdays. Most enjoyable parties were arranged for these important occasions.”
