It was a privilege to participate in Principal for a Day at the Horsham Special School last month. There are more than 70 students enrolled at the school and it is pleasing to see a growing number of families relocating to Horsham from interstate to enable their children to participate in the flexible innovative programs offered at the school. The Advance program for senior students is achieving excellent results. It provides students with opportunities to participate in our local community through a range of volunteering and employment opportunities.

Horsham Greyhound Racing Club Track reopened last month, after an 11-month closure for major works. These works included the resurface, upgrade and widening of the track and installation of a new lure rail, starting boxes and catching pen, making it a much safer environment for animals. The redesigned track puts Horsham at the forefront of greyhound racing in Australia.
Horsham Christian Emergency Food Centre held its annual general meeting recently. The centre provides an invaluable service to the Wimmera and wider community, helping almost 500 people each month. This service would not be possible without the support of local businesses and more than 60 volunteers.
On September 29, I attended the Horsham Police Remembrance Day Service, where I had the honour of laying a wreath in memory of police officers who have died in the line of duty. I also attended the Western Region Division 4 police medals presentation ceremony last week. Thank you to the officers who do an amazing job keeping us safe.
It was great to see our cafes and shops decorated in footy colours for the AFL grand final, with many Adelaide supporters stopping off on their way through to Melbourne – we even sold out of meat pies!
The National Junior Motocross Championships last week attracted more than 3000 people to Horsham. Accommodation providers were fully booked and pubs, cafes and restaurants experienced steady trade. Congratulations to Horsham Motorcycle Club on yet another successful national event. We look forward to next year, when it will host the Junior World Motocross Championships at the Dooen track. The Horsham Show was another fantastic event. It was lovely to see so many families supporting this long-standing local community event.
