Horsham’s Jeff and Bev Pekin were nominated by Sharon Williams for their dedication in giving all children and adults with a disability sporting opportunities.
Mrs Pekin said she was overwhelmed by the award and the words Ms Williams had written.
She said they did not expect recognition for their efforts.
“Everything we do has been to see the smiles on people’s faces – that is enough for us,” she said.
Mr and Mrs Pekin are involved in the access all-abilities table tennis competition and they lend a hand with the Wimmera Whippets football and netball teams.
“There are a lot volunteers for able body sports and not many for sports for disabilities – that makes what we do even more special for us,” Mrs Pekin said.
Ms Williams said without Mr and Mrs Pekin, people would not have the opportunity to participate in sport and socialise with other team members.
“They transport team members who might have no other way of getting to venues to participate in their chosen sport,” she said.
“They never asked for anything in return for the support and care shared around.”
She said the couple was highly valued in the Horsham community.
Horsham Florist co-owner Heather Harrison said people could nominate an Unsung Hero by calling 5382 1834.
