Amanda Bell was at her Austin Street property about 9.30am on February 16 when she heard her partner yell. She discovered five people huddled around her wounded cat, Garfield.
The trap was plied from the cat’s foot and a vet called, but Garfield’s leg was amputated due to nerve damage and loss of blood.
“These traps are highly illegal. This is just disgraceful and a barbaric act of animal violence,” she said.
“I had to pay $2000. I don’t have that sort of money.”
Northern Grampians Shire Council’s Warren Groves said the use of many forms of animal traps were illegal and cruel.
"If property owners believe they have issues caused by cats, foxes or other animals, council's local laws team has a number of cat traps which are available free of charge and can be borrowed for deployment on private property simply by contacting our local laws team," he said.
