The exposure gained from beach volleyball at the Commonwealth Games is being used to build momentum for the next phase of development for the sport in Horsham and Murtoa.

Volleyball’s version of Auskick – Spikezone – will start in the region in the first week of May. It is aimed at juniors aged between seven and 12, and will give them their first experience of the game.
They will receive training and game play during an eight-week program.
The game is played on a badminton court with a softer ball, giving the juniors a better chance of developing their skills.
With the softer ball and the opportunity to learn all the skills, Volleyball Horsham believes this is the right program to start younger participants off, teaching them the game and better preparing them for when they move into the junior competition.
Horsham’s program will run on Wednesdays between 4.45pm and 5.45pm, while the Murtoa program will run on Thursdays between 12.45pm and 1.30pm.
All registered participants will receive a Spikezone backpack – which includes a drink bottle, t-shirt and ball –for $15.
Registrations can be submitted online through the Volleyball Victoria website, with separate links for the Horsham and Murtoa programs.
The new regional development officer will also be involved in both programs, ensuring the participants will receive the best coaching right from the outset.
The Horsham program starts on May 2 at St Brigid’s College, while the Murtoa program starts the next day at the Murtoa College stadium.
