Nurse Ann Vaughan said the centre had been in contact with the council, calling for cash help to improve access to the centre.

Areas of concern include high and steep curbing and disabled parking access for patients and visitors. 

Mrs Vaughan said there was only one car park for people with a disability at the centre. 

“That is often full, so in terms of getting everyone into the centre, we don’t actually have enough space to park people,” she said. 

“We are moving forward with the shire on it. They have been helping us through.

“The council have been really responsive to our request and we’re really happy with their response. We highlighted concerns and everything has been really positive.” 

Mrs Vaughan said a number of elderly people visiting the centre required better parking options. 

“It’s extremely important for us to have safe access to our building and to our parking,” she said. 

Harrow Bush Nursing Centre is one of 15 bush nursing centres in Victoria. 

They are not-for-profit, partially state government-funded organisations. 

The bush nursing centres provide health and wellbeing programs to smaller communities. 

Mrs Vaughan said bush nursing centres provided health services to communities that did not have direct access to general practitioners or hospitals. 

“They are a bit of a community hub that people come to for health checks,” she said. 

“They are nurse-run clinics. We do have emergency care provision after hours through Ambulance Victoria or remote area nurses.” 

Mrs Vaughan said the centre also served as a neighbourhood house and provided programs such as courses and school holiday programs. 

“We also have a clinic where we have visiting health professionals like GPs,” she said. 

“It’s a great model of care and is really important to the community.” 

West Wimmera Shire Council’s chief executive David Leahy said the council was working hard to help the centre and the process has been positive.
