Our March 28 council meeting started at 6pm rather than our usual 9.30am so that councillors could meet members of our Yarriambiack Youth Action Council. Each member was presented with a polo top featuring the shire’s logo and invited to sit in chambers and be part of a formal council meeting.

The Youth Council performs an important role in organising activities and functions throughout the shire.
At Lake Lascelles on April 6 they conducted a Colour Run and used the Southern Mallee Giants scoreboard to show this year’s entries in the Endoreic Short Film Festival. Congratulations to Rori Marshman, Coco Malcolm, Marni Cook, Lana Horman and Emily Hooton who were present to receive awards for their films.
The council also presented our annual Yarriambiack Young Achievers Awards. Congratulations to this year’s worthy recipients Jacob Holm, Cody Gebert, Will Drage, Kael Zanker, Hamish Johns, Aston Hardingham, Hayden Farlow, Blake Hardingham, Brooke Morrow, Brad Muller and Ruby Batchelor.
YYAC members were in action again on April 21 assisting with the Warracknabeal leg of Mega Shreda Weekend at the skate park. Entrants showed their skills using scooters, BMX and skateboards.
Prior to the event, I cut the red ribbon on the mural on the south wall of the sporting complex. The skate park-themed paintings were completed in November 2017 by Juddy Roller artist Kitt Bennett and students from Year 8 at Warracknabeal Secondary College. Funding was provided through a Victorian Government Graffiti Prevention Grant.
The Easter weekend at Warracknabeal was full of activities in wonderful weather. I joined many locals and visitors at the art show, the annual parade of old and new farm machinery, classic cars and floats along Scott Street, in the Lions Park, listening to the buskers’ competition and on Sunday wandering around Wheatland museum.
April 5 was the last day for our CEO Ray Campling after serving 15 years in the role. Ray leaves a fine record of achievements and we wish him well as he enjoys a more relaxed lifestyle.
Our task of finding his replacement has commenced and it is hopeful that a new CEO will take up duties without too much delay. The council has appointed James Magee acting CEO until the position is officially filled.
