The Victorian state government has released an update to the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds after an enormous amount of feedback on their initial proposed code that would have seen substantial, and costly, changes for participants. The changes to the code have demonstrated the ongoing support by both sides of Parliament for the industry and the desire to create a strong, sustainable sport.

The new code broadly requires trainers, breeders and rearers to be compliant by January 1, 2020 and is designed to improve the welfare and integrity of the sport, while improving the racing and post-racing opportunities for the breed. Contact the Horsham Greyhound Racing Club for advice, or further information, with regards to the new code.
On a racing front the club hosted a 12-race card last Saturday with Garry George (Beulah) the only local trainer to record a win with Oh So Rowdy winning race 3 over 410m. The black son of Nitro Burst is building a formidable record with Saturday’s victory his third in his past four starts. He has only missed out on prize money twice in his seven career starts.
Racing this week is a twilight meeting Thursday, away from the regular Tuesday time slot, to accommodate Warrnambool’s Cup Carnival which coincides with the three-day gallops carnival, and there is good representation of locals.
Most interest may come in race 10 with locals Just Tooie (David Gehan), Crymelon Idol (Ian Bibby) and Jar Man (Cliff Smith) holding the first three boxes. All have been racing in good fashion lately, and if there is traffic out wide the three should be able to put themselves in the mix come the end of the 410m.
Ian Bibby also has Crymelon Kit in race 12 in a return from a slight injury at her most recent start. She can fly the lids, currently holding the first split record at the 485m start, and over this 410m journey could put herself in a good position. Hardest to beat may be Amigo One for Kerry Prowse in his easiest assignment in some time.
The first race starts at 2.07pm and concludes with race 12 at 5.43pm.
