The Saints captain missed a large portion of the season while abroad and was thrilled by the progress her side made in her absence.
“It was amazing to come back and see how much the girls had improved from the start of the season,” she said. “To see all of the young girls step up was great.”
Byrne has been at the Saints for the past four seasons after she played her junior netball at the Horsham Demons. She said she enjoyed the friendly rivalry between the two clubs.
“There have been quite a few players switch between the clubs over the years,” she said. “With us being more successful than recent seasons in 2017 we had some really good games. Sunday was a bit lopsided but hopefully next time it’s closer.”
The 27-year-old midcourt player said she enjoyed playing at the Saints because it was such a friendly club.
“It’s really great that they’ve put a lot of time into developing their juniors now as well,” she said.
Byrne enjoys playing alongside current A and B Grade coach Shannon Reinheimer because they’ve been lifelong friends but said it was also exciting to play with the club’s young stars.
“Playing with Maggie and Rene Caris along with Tara Jasper last season was really good,” she said. “At the weekend we also had Lavinia Fox come into the team as well which was great to see. We want to see the junior players continue to com up.”
