Horsham City Netball Association are no longer against proposed multi-purpose sports stadium in Horsham

HORSHAM City Netball Association have changed its stance on a proposed multi-purpose sports stadium in Horsham.

The association had previously told the Wimmera Mail-Times that the proposed stadium would fail to meet its needs. However, the association are now on board with the Horsham Rural City Council led project.

Horsham City Netball Association president Cathie Weidemann said the committee’s original position on the stadium was misinformed. She said there was a lot of noise about the multi-purpose sports stadium plans and the group was not aware of the entire scope of the project.

Mrs Weidemann said the committee was under the impression that the stadium would only have four outdoor netball courts, which did not meet their needs. The association uses seven outdoor courts at Central Park in Horsham.

She said they have since learnt that the proposed stadium will have five outdoor netball courts and three indoor courts.

“We found out from Netball Victoria the whole scope of the project – what it is about, what it will entail and the potential it has for netball in the Wimmera,” she said.

“We now know that there are five courts outside and three inside and that will definitely be enough.”

Mrs Weidemann said the proposed stadium could create opportunities for young Wimmera netballers.

“We will be able to host major events and clinics in Horsham, which is what I had envisioned for Horsham netball,” she said.

“It gives children and coaches opportunities to learn new skills and drills and the netball basics.”

She said the proposed stadium plans could give the association greater flexibility.

“The netball courts outside will have full lighting, which means we don’t have to run our junior matches on a Saturday morning, which currently clash with the Wimmera and Horsham District netball,” she said.

Mrs Weidemann said she wanted to stay in contact with Horsham council to ensure the association remains up-to-date on the project.
