Opera Australia will present Puccini’s Madame Butterfly at Horsham Town Hall in August.
The opera inspired the musical Miss Saigon, and is a love story between a United States naval officer and the geisha he falls in love with while in Japan.
Town hall marketing co-ordinator Charee Smith said it was a coup for the venue to secure such an acclaimed production, with the opera known around the world.
She said as part of the Horsham performance, Opera Australia was seeking Wimmera children between 8 and 14 to be part of the production’s choir.
The Children's Community Choir will perform alongside Opera Australia signers and musicians.
Horsham vocal teacher Lisa Thomas will lead the choir with Opera Australia’s Josh van Konkelenberg.
Ms Smith said successful applicants would rehearse throughout June and July, and learn two songs.
She said auditions for the choir would be at the town hall on Monday between 4pm and 7pm.
“People need to register their interest by 2pm on Friday to secure an audition spot,” she said. Ms Smith said people could call the town hall on 5382 9555 or visit horshamtown.hall.com.au/events to register.
Children who apply for the choir and are unsuccessful will be invited to special singing masterclass with Mr van Konkelenberg.
