The visiting team started better in what was the first clash between the clubs.
Geelong kicked four goals before the Whippets could score, but a great tackle from Lachie Young in the forward 50 set up Alfred Muller for the Whippets’ first goal. At quarter-time, the Whippets trailed by four goals. The Whippets dominated the second quarter but were unable to capitalise, scoring three behinds while Geelong was able to score a major. In the second half, the Whippets tired, with no-one on the bench. Geelong had plenty of fresh legs and kicked away.
The final score was Wimmera Whippets 1.6 (12) defeated by Geelong Dragons 8.9 (57). Better players were Steve Barham, who found a lot of the ball across the half-back line; Josh Barry, who worked tirelessly in the ruck; and Michael Clark at full-back. The Whippets’ next game is away to South Warrnambool on July 15.
