Horsham Aquatic Centre piloted an Active Kids Tribe program for children aged 10 to 12 and now hoped to offer the program to the wider community.
Horsham Aquatic health and wellness coordinator Susan Kirkwood said the program focused on physical activity through a range of activities that children can try. She said children could be dropped off by their parents at 7.30pm and would participate in a different activity each week.
“The program is a great opportunity for the community and our busy parents. There has been different activities offered each week, which the children have really taken to. We’ve had fitness testing, TRX suspension training, a RPM – bike workout – and even kids boxing,” she said.
Ms Kirkwood said the program provided children with a healthy breakfast and would get them ready before they are dropped off to their school with a provided bus service.
She said the response from the children has been positive and parents have noticed a change in behaviours.
“Some parents have commented that the kids seem to feel better throughout the day and the program has been excellent in creating healthy morning habits,” she said. “I get a lot of two thumbs up when I ask the kids if they are enjoying the program. They have also been saying it is fun and they enjoy coming each morning.”
Ms Kirkwood said parents could register their interest through the Horsham Aquatic Centre website.
