Cheney played every game in the Adelaide Crows’ 2016 AFL campaign in a promising season for the Warracknabeal product.
However, an injury-riddled 2017 season meant the former Warrack Eagles player had no opportunity to break into a side that eventually made it to the grand final but lost to Richmond.
Cheney was out of contract at the end of the 2017 season.
He said previously he had entertained thoughts of returning to his his home club if his AFL career was over.
Cheney re-signed with the Adelaide Crows after the 2017 season on a one-year deal and will again be out of contract come the end of the current season.
Further injury setbacks during the 2018 pre-season again meant the 28-year-old had to work his way back into the senior side.
After four solid performances in Adelaide’s South Australian National Football League side Cheney was named on the interchange on Thursday night before spending a majority of Saturday’s match in defence.
Cheney collected 13 disposals and took three marks in the Crows 56-point loss to the Hawks. The Crows sit 11th on the ladder.
