Makayla started her fundraising venture over a year ago when she decided to grow her hair long enough to donate her locks to make a wig for a person battling cancer. 

She said the motivation behind her decision to donate her tresses and raise money for Cancer Council Victoria was two-fold. 

Her first reason was that her grandmother Margaret Hopper was diagnosed with bladder cancer. 

Makayla has been watching her grandmother go through immunotherapy since last year. She said the treatment appeared to be working and her grandmother was getting better. 

“I decided now was a good time to cut my hair because my grandma is going through treatment for cancer, so I thought what better time to finally cut it off,” she said. 

However, Makayla said she had been thinking about cutting off her hair for a worthy cause for a very long time. 

She said the thought that she could not bare to lose her hair had put her off the idea. While the thought of losing her hair still scares her, she said she hoped her actions could give a person fighting cancer more confidence. 

“I thought that if I could help someone else by donating my hair for a wig then I could give that person some confidence to get through a difficult time in their life,” she said.  

Makayla said she would be cutting 36 centimetres off her hair on June 29. This would bring her hair to her shoulders.

In the lead up to the big cut she has created a ‘Go Fund Me’ page in an effort to raise money.

“I was hoping to raise a small amount, but I have already raised more than what I thought I would,” she said. “It’s nice to see people putting money towards such a great cause.”
