Ms Pollock works three days a week, while Greg McKinnon covers the remaining two school days.
A former Horsham High School student, Ms Pollock graduated in 1991, going into nursing, welfare and then Bible College, studying Christian ministry before starting at Horsham College four years ago. Her role involves pastoral care, especially for years 7, 8 and 9. Students are sometimes referred by teachers. Ms Pollock helps run a life skills program.
She said teenage years can be so challenging, as so much is happening during that growing period. Handling family issues is quite a significant issue for a fraction of the students, as is social media and the need to be connected with friends all the time.
With more than 900 pupils at the college, Ms Pollock said welfare was a constant challenge.
However, society – especially older people – can be a strong support to younger people, so often just to have a friendly chat can be so rewarding.
Lois Cramer thanked Ms Pollock for a most informative address.
