Fred Lowe, a life member of the club, played in the ‘58 premiership and said it was great to see former players return.
“We had 60 ex-Goroke players attend, representing four senior premiership teams from 1958, ‘63, ‘65 and ‘81,” he said.
“We also had a number of players from reserves and junior premierships. We had one fella fly down from Ipswich, two come from central New South Wales and then a couple from Geelong and Ballarat.”
The reunion coincided with Border Districts’ home game against Naracoorte. The senior side lost by five points.
“We had afternoon tea and lined the premiership teams and took some photos,” Lowe said. “We had six past presidents of the club there. Everyone enjoyed it and we all finished up in one room, going through a lot of the things that happened many years ago and relive it all again.
“It was great to have the fellas come back and it was probably the last opportunity we will have to get together.
“The footballers from Borders and their supporters all understood the importance of it and we had plenty of them join in as well.”
Border Districts president and former Goroke president Darren Walter said it was pleasing to welcome back past players.
“Saturday was a great day for both the Border Districts Football and Netball club and the Goroke community,” he said.
“It was fantastic to catch up with plenty of past team mates and see so many others doing the same. The organising committee lead by Fred Lowe should be very proud of the day and I felt honoured to be given the task of welcoming and introducing a number of past premiership teams and past players.”
