National Party state director Matthew Harris said five outstanding candidates had put themselves forward to be candidates for the Western Victoria Region at a meeting of party delegates in Ballarat on Saturday.

Glenelg Shire Cr Anita Rank and Tatyoon farmer Leila McDougall also stood for preselection.

“Joanne Armstrong and Andrew Black were preselected to be on the Coalition ticket at this year’s state election,” he said

“As per the party’s constitution, the order on the ticket will be determined this week.”

The party will award Ms Armstrong and Mr Black either spot three or five on the Coalition’s five-spot ticket for Western Victoria. 

A National Party source told Fairfax Media that Mr Black’s supporters would push for him to be awarded spot three, given he secured the most delegates.

Lowan MP Emma Kealy congratulated Ms Armstrong and Mr Black, as well as all the preselection candidates. 

“An inspiring morning hearing from five outstanding Nationals candidates with a passionate commitment to rural and regional Victoria,” she stated on social media. 

“Congratulations to all preselection candidates for their commitment and immense effort.”
