Horsham Community and Police Consultative Committee has worked since last year on a project to install automated defibrillators at external locations across the city.
Earlier this year, the group identified six priority locations for the devices, and successfully applied for funding through Ambulance Victoria for their project.
The locations were Sawyer Park, the Woolworths toilet block, Roberts Avenue, May Park toilet block, Weir Park, and the Westpac Bank corner.
Now, the committee wants to ensure residents know how to use the potentially life-saving devices.
Group member Andrea Cross said a training session in Horsham tonight would show people what to do if they ever needed to use a defibrillator.
“There are many sporting clubs, organisations and businesses who have installed an automated external defibrillator, and it is vitally important that people know how simple they are to use,” she said.
“They have the potential to save lives.
“Vic First Aid education services will offer a free community information session so people can learn how easy an AED is to use if they are confronted with a medical emergency.”
The training session will run at Horsham Sports and Community Club from 6pm to 6.30pm.
Mrs Cross said people could visit trybooking.com.au/WKEE to register.
She said the group planned to arrange a second session if demand for tonight’s session exceeded capacity.
She said people could call her on 0400 425 254 or consultative committee chairman David Eltringham on 0418 147 482 for more information.
Mrs Cross said as part of the committee’s project, Axis Employment had also installed an external defibrillator near the entry to their Firebrace Street offices.
She said while knowing how to use defibrillators was important, registering the devices with Ambulance Victoria was also paramount.
She said people could visit ambulance.vic.gov.au/register to do this.
