Councillor Alethea Gulvin said at a meeting on Monday night that members of the community had questioned whether a bin liner needed to be placed in yellow bins.
Horsham’s technical services director John Martin said any recyclable good placed in plastic bags would go straight to landfill.
“Any recyclable good placed in plastic bags cannot be separated at the sorting plant – so leaving it in a plastic bag means it will go straight to landfill,” he said.
“Plastic bags cannot be recycled so they are a no-no in the recycling bin."
Mr Martin said people should ignored the advice they were told about placing a bin liner in a yellow bin prior to placing recyclable material inside.
