The Giants are the second team this season to conquer the Demons, and won 13.8 (86) to 11.1 (67).
The two finals-bound teams had different halves in the round 12 Wimmera league clash.
Demons were in control during the first half, using speed and slick movement of the ball to spread the Giants.
Giant Brock Orval was yellow carded in the second term, leaving his team with one less player on the oval.
Giants coach Coleman Schache said he didn’t see the incident involving Orval.
“He was definitely one of the best players at the end of the day, he scored four in the third quarter,” he said.
The Giants trailed the Demons by 27 points at the halfway mark in the game.
Schache said his team couldn’t control the Demons’ good players in the opening half.
“They were moving the ball really well and we couldn’t move the ball the way we wanted to,” he said.
A premiership quarter to remember helped the Giants gain its momentum and eventual win against one of the leagues more stable defensive outfits.
The Giants scored eight goals in the third term to the Demons’ two.
Schache said each player lifted and performed to their full potential in the third quarter.
Home ground advantage helped the Giants keep the Demons at bay in the final term.
Schache said the team remained consistent across the ground in the fourth quarter.
“We think highly of the Demons and think they are the benchmark of the competition, to get a big scalp like that just gives us heaps of belief,” he said.
Demons coach Deek Roberts said his team didn’t come out of the half time break with the same effort and intensity as it did in the first half.
“We controlled the footy and got our game going and got on top of the clearances in the first half,” he said.
“In the second half it was the complete opposite.
“We allowed them to get easy forward entries and they piled the goals on.”
Roberts said the Giants run and carry through the middle of the oval hurt his team in the second half.
“It was hard to stop. On a big ground, when a team gets on a roll, it is hard to defend because you have to run hard forward and back,” he said.
“We weren’t quick enough with them in that third quarter.”
Roberts said his team will assess what it did wrong in the Giants clash and try to rectify the problems it found.
“It was a little bit disappointing, we need to show more fight than that,” he said.
