The Bureau of Meteorology said a cold front would cross Victoria today.
Northerly winds are expected to increase ahead of the front, then shift west to northwesterly following the front.
Damaging northerly winds averaging 50kmh to 60kmh with peak gusts of 90kmh to 100kmh are forecast to develop over the warning area by early afternoon on Tuesday.
Heavy showers and thunderstorms may also produce gusts of around 100kmh.
The damaging winds are expected to ease from the west later today.
The warning has also been issued for people in Central, Mallee, South West, Northern Country, North Central, West and South Gippsland, Wimmera and parts of East Gippsland and North East Forecast Districts.
The bureau also issued a warning for sheep graziers.
They said there was a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to conditions today.
Stawell Primary School office manager Chelsea Maddocks said the wild weather had caused damage to the school’s shade sails.
“Our hands are tied at the moment,” she said.
“We can’t take them down because it’s too dangerous.
“We’ve contacted the State Emergency Service and they said they can’t get to us at the moment because they have higher priorities.”
The VicEmergency app showed at 2.45pm, there were 42 incidents across the Wimmera.
The State Emergency Service advises people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
- Keep clear of fallen power lines.
More to come.
