So far, we have received a growing season rainfall of 76mm, so there is a bit to catch up on. The positive is that all crops are up and still alive, but we are still in the hunt. Not the time to chuck the towel in just yet!
At the time of writing, this week and next is looking promising in the rainfall stakes, so ever hopeful that we receive enough for a meaningful harvest.
Normally at this time of year we are occupied with the 3 S’s (Spraying, Spreading and Sheep). At present, we are only focusing on the last one and it is the sheep that have kept us busy. Having containment areas set up has proved to be most beneficial with surplus screenings and downgraded grain providing an ideal feed mix to finish the lambs on.
Combine this with the cracking lamb prices at the moment, the livestock game is that much more enjoyable. Perhaps it could be said, the shining light in a somewhat uncertain year?
Designed to keep mind and body busy and just so happened to coincide with the school holidays, a new fence was erected between two paddocks to stall sheep from becoming free range.
The construction of another stock containment area was also on the cards. The plan was simple, two weeks, two boys, too easy!
Unfortunately, a few too many distractions did interfere with the timeline plan, but good fun was had and progress was made (a fire and food always help!)
The project continues after school occasionally and fits in around sport on weekends. A side benefit has been increased discussion from the younger members of the family on how to improve containment and sheep yard design.
On the family front, we were very saddened to lose an uncle recently. A great bloke, who lived a great life. Always up for a yarn and enquiring how things were going on the farm. He will be missed and fondly remembered.
Here’s hoping some good rainfall comes our way very soon and the year finishes a bit kinder then it started.
