The Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources has released a funding program to encourage exploration of minerals in western Victoria.
Companies wishing to explore land in the Wimmera can apply for grants of $500,000 to assist with exploration of gold and copper.
In his report to Yarriambaick Shire Council at its July meeting on Wednesday, Infrastructure and Planning director James Magee said the grants were made available following geo-research in the region.
“They discovered that there are a lot of minerals that haven’t been touched on in Yarriambiack,” he said.
“It could be quite significant for the region which is rich in gold and copper.
“Exploration is happening all the time in our shire, as is roadside soil testing.
“It is hoped that economic activity is brought into the area and that mining is apparent into the future.”
He said DEDJTR would provide support for landowners by conducting workshops and assistance in developing land access and compensation agreements.
“The tender invites minerals exploration companies to submit an application for the sole right to apply for a minerals exploration licence for one or more of the 11 minerals exploration licence areas being offered,” he said.
