Member for Lowan Emma Kealy and Nationals leader Peter Walsh announced a Coalition government would “kick-start” the transformation of the riverfront precinct by investing $150,000 into a development plan if they are elected in November.
The plan will specifically focus on the area next to the Horsham Greyhound Racing Track, Horsham Showgrounds and the Western Highway.
Ms Kealy said she hoped the election pledge would boost tourism and support local jobs.
“I’ve been blown away by the number of locals who have asked me what can we do to unlock the Wimmera River precinct. Why can’t they pop down to the river to grab a coffee or have a meal?" she said.
“I’ve been speaking about this for a long time with local groups and businesses. It’s important to create a really strong vision to activate the Wimmera River.”
She said the Nationals were making a commitment to get the project off the ground.
“(We have been) working with the community and Horsham Rural City Council to create a plan to maximise the potential of the Wimmera River and in turn deliver benefits for the wider region,” she said.
“By activating the precinct, locals and tourists alike will be able to enjoy a coffee or a bite to eat with a fantastic view of one of our greatest natural assets.”
Ms Kealy said she was looking forward to hearing more from the community and seeing the project progress.
Horsham Rural City Council chief executive Sunil Bhalla said the prospect was exciting.
“Council has been in talks with the Nationals on and off about this,” he said.
“This is taking the first step in the planning process; it’s really exciting and a great opportunity.
“The river is a great asset for the community and we need a long-term, plan to unlock the potential of the river.”
Mr Walsh said the Nationals were pleased to help the community’s vision become a reality.
“This commitment is just one way the Nationals in government will deliver a better deal for tourism and jobs in the Horsham community,” he said.
