The Southern Roos cemented a top-of-the-table finish with a 15.15 (105) to 3.4 (22) victory against the Storm.
The Southern Roos limited Storm to one scoring shot in the opening quarter and managed nine goals in the third quarter.
Southern Roos coach Nick Pekin said his team felt confident after the massive victory.
“The conditions didn’t allow great footy to be played but overall I am pretty pleased by the four quarter effort by my boys,” he said.
It’s good momentum coming into the finals campaign.
- Nick Pekin
Pekin said there was sporadic showers throughout the battle.
“It was pretty ordinary and it was blowing pretty hard. We just had to curve their inside 50 influence,” he said.
Pekin said his team had one of its best second half performances on Saturday.
“We come out firing. We knew we had to keep the pressure up and keep the intensity because we knew it would be a dog fight until the end,” he said.
Pekin said the Southern Roos played to its strengths.
“The little things we did really well. Blocks, shepherds, smothers and tackles. Our tackle count was pretty high,” he said.
Pekin said winning form is good form.
“It’s good momentum coming into the finals campaign,” he said.
“We kept our game pretty simple, we didn’t need to reinvent the wheel.”
Peter Staude was named best on field for the Southern Roos.
“He was in and under and did a bit of grunt work. Cody Deutscher kicked four goals and was really solid in the guts and up forward,” Pekin said.
“Todd Lawrence was pretty handy.”
Storm coach Tim Inkster said the Southern Roos proved why it has lost just one game throughout the 2018 season.
“It shows that they all train together and have a good understanding of each other,” he said.
“It doesn’t look good for us but it doesn’t change anything.
“They were super clean and are obviously well drilled. They all work really hard for one another, they are going to be pretty hard to beat.”
Inkster said his team sustained no injuries during the clash against the Southern Roos.
Ash Clugston didn’t feature in the game and Inkster said he is a possible return when the first final comes around.
Inkster said there were other possible returns for finals football.
Inkster said Tom Clugston and Peter Weir were the clear standouts for the Storm.
“Tom did a great job down back. The ball went in 60 or 70 times for them into their 50 and he did a great job,” he said.
“Weir up the other end, the ball only went into our forward 50 15 times, but each time he was in front and gave us a real target, we just couldn’t get the ball to him.”
