Mr Rohrsheim started the organic vegetable farm three years ago and hasn’t looked back since.
Mr Rohrsheim grew up in the Wimmera before travelling to Melbourne and Cairns to work for broad acre agriculture and cereal breeding companies.
He said his passion stemmed from the urge to grow natural, homegrown produce after he witnessed first-hand how broad acre crops were produced and the amount of chemicals that were used.
“It really pushed me in the opposite direction,” he said.
“The majority of my life I have worked in waterculture, agriculture and viticulture. All sorts of growing stuff in different ways and forms, and I was a keen veggie gardener at home.”
Mr Rohrsheim said, as he grew older, he wanted to do something he enjoyed for the remainder of his working life.
“It seemed to be the right thing for me to do,” he said.
Mr Rohrsheim said he was only just starting to iron out the creases coming into his third season.
“It has been a lot of trial and error. There has been a lot of work to fix mistakes,” he said.
“You can study all you can about growing veggies, the information is freely available. But until you actually put it into the context of my bit of land, my soil, in Horsham, the Wimmera climate… it’s taken a couple years to get it right.”
Mr Rohrsheim said there were factors which affected the growth of certain vegetables in the Wimmera.
“Salad greens grow really well for a majority of the year but then you get to February and March where we get those 40 degree days, they just get burnt,” he said.
“This year I have a big hot house with big overhead misting which I’ll water several times a day to try get it to survive.”
Radishes are difficult to grow in the Wimmera due to the length of time it takes for them to ripen.
Mr Rohrsheim said he was looking to improve the efficiency of his work by bringing in state-of-the-art technology, unable to purchase as an everyday, backyard gardener.
Haven Grown produces onions, garlic, beetroot, tomatoes, chillies, capsicum, cucumber, zucchini, salad greens, leafy greens and micro greens.
Mr Rohrsheim said the three main restaurants that bought produce from him were bar3400, Nourish'd Eatery and Deidre’s. He said he also sold at the Haven and Natimuk markets.
“Through summer last season I also opened up one day a week from home. This year I am looking at bringing it into Horsham every Saturday morning that there isn’t a Haven Market,” he said.
