Exell has been co-coach this season alongside Stuart Farr. Farr will continue on as senior coach next season after joining the club this season for the first time.
Kalkee president Heath Martin said Exell would continue to play with the club next season.
“Hamish is busy with young children and his work on the farm so he wants to have a bit more of a home focus,” he said. “Hamish will be there as a player and we are very happy to have him on board.”
Martin said there was little hesitation in locking down Farr for next season.
“You can’t question his commitment to both the senior players and junior players coming through the club,” he said.

“He has a lot of respect in our club and in the league.
“The players don’t have to worry about who is going to coach next season now; it makes it a lot easier with retaining and recruiting players. We are still open to looking at other joint coaches and assistant coaches.”
Farr helped guide Kalkee to second on the ladder in the regular season and said he had loved his first season at the club.
“I’ve loved being back in football and it’s a great family club,” he said.
“It’s a very young group and I don’t think we are near our best. We want to make some noise this year but obviously keep building.”
Farr said he had enjoyed coaching alongside Exell.
“I’ve enjoyed having a joint coach and am very open to doing that again next season and I enjoy teaching people,” he said.
“Hamish leads more by example and we have always had a good relationship.”
