The tower in Yaapeet, activated last week, provides coverage for calls, text and data services across the provider’s 4G and 3G networks in the town, and will improve services between Hopetoun and Rainbow.
The tower, part of round two of the federal government’s Mobile Black Spot Program, was the result of a community campaign to improve coverage in the Mallee.
Yaapeet farmer Troy Fisher said residents were pleased with the service.
“We were hoping the new tower would give us some improvement, but seeing it in action we’ve been completely blown away by the results,” he said.
“This new coverage between Hopetoun and Rainbow means I can stay in contact for my business and with my family, without having to stop driving or avoid large areas with no coverage.”
Optus mobile planning manager Vin Mullins said the organisation always looked for opportunities to work with communities.
“It was great to meet the community to discuss the proposal and it’s even better to hear the feedback now that the site has gone live,” he said.
