Now he is showing his more serious side in his new one-man show, Hell Ship – the Journey of the Ticonderga. The show will be performed at the Horsham Town Hall on Saturday, September 8.
Following one of the most dramatic stories of Australia’s early maritime history, the show is one close to Mr Veitch’s heart.
It tells the story of the 1850s emigrant vessel Ticonderoga, which sailed from England to Melbourne. During the journey, nearly 800 passengers and crew died from typhus.
When news of the ‘fever ship’ reached Melbourne, the city went into a panic. The Ticonderoga was forced to anchor near Portsea where remaining passengers were either nursed back to health, or allowed to die.
The ship’s surgeon James William Henry Veitch – who nursed many of the sick passengers back to health – was Mr Veitch’s great-great grandfather.
The play is recommended to maritime history buffs, or anyone who enjoys engaging storytelling.
Hell Ship – the Journey of the Ticonderga will be performed at the Horsham Town Hall on Saturday, September 8 at 8pm.
