The flag was used as a decoration on one of the flag poles at City Oval in Horsham.
AFL Wimmera-Mallee general manager Stephen McQueen said the flag was on the pole on Friday night and when he opened up the ground on Saturday morning it was gone.
“It was taken Friday night or Saturday morning,” he said.
“It was there at 9.30pm on Friday night and it was missing when I opened up at 6.30am on Saturday morning.
“We would assume someone would have had to have climbed the fence for a start, taken the flag and disappeared into the night air.
“We would like it sent back to the league. It has been lodged as missing with the police. The true value is sentimental to the club and worthless to any other person.”
Southern Roos president Rosemary Langley said the flag was a piece of the club’s history.
“It is disappointing. I dare say it has been done as a lark by somebody but it’s a fair bit of our history so it would be really good if we could get it back,” she said.
“We are thinking someone has taken it at this stage but exactly when and how we are unsure.”
Mr McQueen said the league appreciates that clubs allow the league to use their flags on grand final day and it was disappointing to see something stolen.
“The league appreciates the clubs letting us borrow their property for grand final day and it’s a disappointment that something like this could happen,” he said.
