The appointment of Delahunty, who was captain of the side this season, comes after this season’s coach Damian Cameron decided to step down.
Former player Tim MacKenzie will return to the club as assistant coach.
Burras president Scott Arnold said the club was excited by the appointment of Delahunty and McKenzie.
“John is a quality person and well respected, not only at our club but in the district,” Mr Arnold said.
“He is a born leader and natural footballer. We wanted that stability in the off-season. John has been in the role for about a week and player retention has been really good so far.”
The club advertised for the role and looked externally before deciding Delahunty was the best fit.
“He has a strong connection with family and friends in the club and will bring some fresh ideas,” Mr Arnold said.
“This is the first time we have missed finals for six or seven seasons so we feel like we have under-preformed and the group is keen to rebound.”
Mr Arnold said MacKenzie was a solid recruit for the club.
“Tim is another ex-local who is returning and there are quite a few guys who are looking at coming back,” he said.
“Tim has been playing for Glenelg in the South Australian National Football League. He made his senior debut at the start of the season but then played mostly in reserves and won the reserves best and fairest for his club.”
Delahunty said coaching had always been an aim.
“It had been in the back of my mind to have a go at some stage but initially I wasn’t too sure on the whole job,” he said.
“I decided to put my hand up and apply for the position.
“I played all of my junior footy here and I moved away to school and down to Melbourne for university and I’ve been back here on the farm for six years now.
“Within the week I’ve confirmed 90% of the playing list, which I’m really excited about. That’s given me a lot of confidence.”
Delahunty said at this stage two players have decided not to play next season with the Burras.
“I was only coach for 12 hours and we managed to get Tim as assistant coach so that’s a great start,” he said.
“He has brought a great buzz back to the club and the community. The majority of this playing group has played in the past two grand finals, so we have a lot of talent within the group. We didn’t improve this season like we had in the past.”
