Mr Pyers was recognised in the outstanding secondary principal category.
Mr Pyers has been the principal of Horsham College over the past five years and has since led the revival of his school.
Mr Pyers said the recognition was a reflection of the hard work achieved by the school staff as a collective.
“I am not a person who enjoys personal accolades too much. For me, it just means more for the work the school has done,” he said.
“It is a great acknowledgement for the whole school community and the journey it has been on since I took on the principals role. I am certainly proud of the people that I work with.”
Seeing the growth of both individuals and the staff as a collective, and being able to be a part of that and support that is rewarding.

Horsham College has undergone significant transformation over five years including the long-awaited redevelopment and success in its literacy, numeracy and VCE outcomes. However, Mr Pyers considered the growth and development in the school’s culture as his biggest accomplishment.
“Seeing the growth of both individuals and the staff as a collective, and being able to be a part of that and support that is rewarding,” he said.
“One of the great things for me is being able to walk around the school and see the students on a day-to-day basis and see the way they interact with each other both inside and outside the classroom.
“It makes me very proud as a principal to see what we as a school have been able to achieve.”

Mr Pyers said the community should be proud of the school’s growth in just five years.
“We are the highest performing regional school in about 500 in Victoria – that itself is a great achievement,” he said.
“It is a challenge to have a rural and remote disadvantage and as a government school we take in and support everyone.
“To be able to do all this and work positively with all the schools in Horsham is a positive achievement.”
The winners of the awards will be announced on October 26.
