Crews are upgrading about two kilometres of the Borung Highway between the town and Warracknabeal to improve safety and reliability.
The work about four kilometres north-east of Dimboola started this month, and is part of suite of projects managed through the state government’s new Regional Roads Victoria group.
The group will repair and upgrade more than 1500 kilometres of country Victorian roads, many of which were built between 60 and 70 years ago.
Horsham-based Millers Civil Contractors are managing the Borung Highway repairs.
Regional Roads Victoria western regional director Mal Kersting said the works were part of the biggest road maintenance blitz regional Victoria had ever seen.
“These works will not only result in a safer and smoother journey for drivers, but they'll also lessen wear and tear on freight vehicles and support primary producers.”
The highway works will address issues related to areas of rough and distressed pavement.
Workers are strengthening the existing pavement with crushed rock and sealing the road to provide a weatherproof and resilient surface.
The works are due to be finished by the end of October.
More than 520 vehicles travel along this section of the Borung Highway each day, with heavy commercial vehicles making up more than 20 per cent of that traffic.
Road crews are also upgrading another two-kilometre section of the Borung Highway at Wallup, with further highway work closer to Warracknabeal in the planning stages for next year.
The Wallup upgrade will be completed by November, with the additional work due to be finished by June next year.
