Lakin, who was named best on ground in Horsham’s premiership win this season, will join Shayne Breuer, Brendan Bryan and Amanda Wik as the coaching staff for the Wimmera squad.
Lakin said he was excited for the opportunity to be involved with the program.
“With the opportunity to learn from blokes like Shayne Breuer, who is one of the best coaches in country Victoria, it was an easy decision to be involved,” he said.
Lakin played in the Rebels program himself as a junior.
He said he could help the young players because he knows what they will be going through.
Lakin will be involved with the Wimmera Rebels training squad before the final 2019 team is announced.
“You get the best coaches in the area and you are training with all the best players when you get to Ballarat,” he said.
“It’s the first real structural game plan that you play in real depth. You learn a lot of little things and the skills improve a lot. They teach you a lot off the football field on improving yourself as a person as well.
“It will be more of a learning role and for me to be that contact for the younger guys and knowing what they are going through.”
AFL Wimmera-Mallee development manager Jason Muldoon said Lakin was a great inclusion.
“Ben will be one of the coaches across the under-18s and under-16s Rebels program,” he said.
“From our point of view, it’s a really good addition and he is a guy who has been through the Rebels program. He will be able to advise the boys on what will happen and how they will feel going into games.
“We thought it was important to get someone who might have some coaching aspirations and it’s a great opportunity for him to learn.”
The Wimmera squad will start training on November 12 before a Christmas break.
