Dimboola’s Robyn Fraser witnessed a greyhound “savagely” kill a kangaroo on her private property at about 6pm on Monday.
She lives near Horseshoe Bend campground, which is located in Little Desert National Park.
Ms Fraser said she tried to help the kangaroo, but unfortunately she was too late.
“It crossed my mind that I would get bitten, so I grabbed a pipe from the garden to protect myself,” she said. “Once I got down there I could see that the kangaroo was dead and I saw the dog run off through my gate and into its owner’s car.”
Ms Fraser said she was overwhelmed with emotions.
“To see a kangaroo savagely killed in front of my eyes was devastating,” she said.
While this was the first incident she has witnessed, Ms Fraser said there was an ongoing issue with visitors not abiding to the area’s rules.
She said many people visiting the area for the weekend bring dogs off-leash, which was not acceptable.
“I live in an area where you are not allowed dogs or to shoot. People need to know that it is illegal to use guns and have dogs out here,” she said.
“If people are visiting for the weekend, then they need to know the rules before they come out.”
Parks Victoria area chief ranger Zoe Wilkinson said there is signage stating that dogs are not permitted in Little Desert National Park and people need to abide by the rules of the area.
“Although this incident occurred on private property, it’s worth reminding people that dogs aren’t permitted in national parks, which are areas set aside for conservation,” she said.
