Brandon Weatherson joins the Lakers from the Mininera and District Football League where he coached Glenthompson-Dunkeld last season.
“It’s a footy league that I haven’t seen much of, but I’m very keen to get involved,” Weatherson said.
“The opportunity to coach a team that has been down at the bottom for a little bit is exciting as well, and hopefully we can win a few games next year.”
Weatherson faces a massive task with the Lakers, who were winless in 2018 and won only one game the season before.
Weatherson is however uniquely qualified for the task. In his first year as senior coach, he took Glenthompson-Dunkeld from a ninth-placed finish in 2017 to third last season.
Weatherson is hopeful he can replicate similar success at Taylors Lake, but admitted it will be a difficult task.
“Last year we probably weren’t as far off as Taylors Lake are,” he said.
“It’s not something that is going to happen overnight. It might take two, maybe three years, but we’ll focus on just trying to get ourselves in a good position.
“I said to the Taylors Lake boys, we’re going to start pretty simple, get the fundamentals of the game plan right and hopefully win a few games along the way.”
Weatherson believes the evenness of the league gives Taylors Lake something to be excited about next season.
“It’s good because I think the top few teams are obviously a fair way ahead of everyone else,” he said.
“But the last six or seven can all beat each other. So for us, if we win one game we’ve obviously improved, but we’ll be looking to take a few more scalps than that.”
Weatherson’s first task is to assess the current playing list and attract a number of new recruits.
“Our main focus will be to sign everyone who played last year and have a good look at the list and have a good look at where we want to go,” he said.
“We’ll make some signings too. It’s quite a young squad, so we will look to add a little bit of experience, try to recruit a few older fellas and key position players.
“They’ve obviously got to come for the right reasons and be part of the challenge for the long haul, because it’s not going to happen overnight.”
After an extensive search for the right candidate, club president Tammy McDonald said Weatherson was the right man for the job, and was hopeful about the club’s future.
"The club has a great amount of young talent within the current playing group, and Brandon will be able to further develop that," Ms McDonald said.
"Brandon will have plenty of support within the club as we look to see some wins on the board next year."
