Cheney played 44 games for Adelaide after joining the club ahead of the 2015 season.
He has also played for Melbourne, where he made his debut in 2009, and then Hawthorn from 2011-2014.
A tough run with injuries cruelled Cheney’s chances of playing more regular football.
He played 24 games in 2016 before missing all of 2017 through injury and returned in the back half of this season to play eight games.
Warrack Eagles coach Ryan McKenzie said he was still good mates with Cheney and would give him some time to consider his playing options for next season.
“Obviously we will be interested in contacting him about next season, but it is a bit early at the moment,” he said.
“I’m pretty good mates with Kyle and we have spoken in the past about playing together again at some point. I will give him some time and we will definitely be speaking at some point.”
Cheney and McKenzie played in a junior premiership together for the Warrack Eagles.
“It’s always good to try and get players like that back,” McKenzie said.
“I went away for a few years myself and more recently Nick Peters has gone away and payed in the Victorian Football League and come back as well.
“It would be nice to get Kyle back – we all played in a junior flag together so it would be great to play in a senior one.”
