Roads around the region are expected to be busy due to the Melbourne Cup Carnival long-weekend.
Horsham Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Heath Martin said patrols would be cracking down on drivers doing the wrong thing.
“All possible Highway Patrol units will be out on the road,” he said.
“We will be concentrating on speeding drivers, and drink and drug drivers.”
He said police would also be keeping an eye on drivers choosing to travel long distances.
“We encourage people who are doing long trips this weekend to take regular breaks and swap drivers if possible,” he said.
“We expect a lot of people on the highways travelling between Adelaide and Melbourne, but also expect the back-roads to be busy too.”
Last year, eight people died on Victoria’s roads during the Melbourne Cup Carnival long weekend.
Operation Furlong will start at 12.01am on Friday, November 2 and will finish at 11.59pm on Tuesday, November 6.
